History

Perth Strathspey & Reel Society was set up in 1989 by a small group of enthusiastic musicians under the leadership of John Napier. Sadly, many of these founder members are no longer with us, but we hope to foster their aspirations for a strong Society by continuing the work they began. A formal constitution was drawn up which forms the basis of how we run our affairs to date. The Society went from strength to strength gaining many new members over the years.

Our Annual Concerts have been held in Perth Agricultural Centre, Perth Concert Hall, Perth Theatre and in the North Inch Campus. This Annual Concert is the highlight of our year when we invite well – known guest musicians and singers from all over Scotland to join us on stage. In 2017 the Annual Concert will be held in the Salutation Hotel Perth for the first time.

Various recordings have been made of our music and we have performed on Grampian television. Our most recent CD ‘The 25 Years’ is very popular.

In 1998 we embarked on our first tour of Ontario, Canada, performing in Wexford, Toronto, Stratford, Orilla, Perth, Halliburton, and Fergus. Due its success, we revisited Canada in 2001 performing at Kingston and Sarnia. Two very successful trips to France followed, visiting Cognac and Confolen to name but 2. All of these trips involved an immense amount work by the committee at that time and we pay tribute to their organisational skills.

We celebrated our 25th anniversary with a dinner in the Royal George Hotel. Founder members received silver badges from the members In appreciation of their dedication to the Society over the years. They were Arthur Chapman , Peter Campbell and Sandy Farmer. Several other members also received badges in 2015 for their long service and loyalty to the Society. They were Bruce Wilson, Ann Brown, Willie Ewan and Kirsty Buchan.

For many years our meeting place was in the AK.Bell Library. From September 2016 practices were held in the Mission Hall at St Matthews Church Tay Street Perth at 7pm.In January 2017 the practice venue changed to the Ex-Servicemen's Club Perth.[7pm -9pm] We are always on the lookout for new members.
